We sat down with the team at GreenLife — one of Charlotte's premium hemp retailers — to talk about what customers are really looking for, why THC beverages are changing the category, and where it all goes from here.
If you've spent any time in the Charlotte hemp market, you know GreenLife. As one of the area's most respected premium hemp retailers, they've spent years at the front lines of the category — educating customers, curating shelves, and watching a nascent industry grow into something that's starting to feel genuinely mainstream.
We sat down with their team to ask the questions we hear most from our own customers: What draws people to functional beverages in the first place? Does the faster onset actually make a difference? And is this a trend, or something more permanent?
Here's what they told us.
What draws your customers to functional hemp beverages specifically — what are they hoping to feel, and are they finding it?
One of the biggest reasons customers are drawn to THC beverages is curiosity. They've heard about them from friends, seen them in bars and restaurants or online, and they want to know what the hype is about. Once we start talking with them, we usually find they're looking for something that feels familiar and fits naturally into their lifestyle.
Unlike a traditional edible, a beverage becomes part of the occasion. Whether it's relaxing after work, sitting around a fire pit with friends, or having something to sip on at dinner, customers enjoy that it feels like a drink first and a cannabis product second. It gives them a familiar social experience without having to smoke or step away from the group.
What we've found is that customers aren't just buying a THC beverage — they're buying the experience that comes with it. They want something approachable, social, and easy to enjoy, and that's exactly why we see so many people coming back after trying them for the first time.
Nano-emulsified beverages promise a faster onset than traditional edibles. Do your customers actually notice the difference, and does that change how they use the product?
Absolutely. The faster onset is one of the first things customers notice, and it's one of the biggest reasons they come back. Instead of waiting close to an hour wondering when an edible is going to kick in, customers usually have a much better idea of how they feel by the time they finish the drink. That makes the experience feel a lot more predictable.
What we really see is that it gives customers more confidence in the product. They can start with one beverage, see how they feel, and make informed decisions from there — instead of committing to an edible and waiting to see what happens. That quicker feedback has made THC beverages much more approachable, especially for people who are newer to cannabis.
When a customer is looking to replace or reduce their alcohol consumption, how do you guide that conversation — and what makes a beverage feel like a credible substitute?
This is one of the most common conversations we have in our stores. The first thing we explain is that everyone's tolerance is different, just like it is with alcohol, so we always start by figuring out what kind of experience they're looking for before recommending a product.
For someone who's new, we'll usually recommend starting with a lower-dose beverage. The goal isn't to chase the strongest product — it's to help them find an experience that's comfortable and enjoyable. Once they understand how THC affects them personally, it's much easier to recommend products that fit what they're looking for.
I think what really makes THC beverages such a credible alternative is that they preserve the experience. People still get to unwind after work, enjoy dinner with friends, or have something in their hand while everyone else is having a drink. Most customers aren't trying to replace alcohol completely — they're just looking for another option that fits those same moments.
What's the biggest misconception about hemp-derived THC that you find yourself correcting the most?
One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that stronger always means better. A lot of customers come in asking for the highest THC percentage or the highest milligram product, but that's rarely where the conversation ends.
One of our favorite parts of the job is introducing people to the bigger picture. THC is just one piece of the puzzle. Cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, or CBN, along with a product's terpene profile, can have a huge impact on the overall experience. Sometimes the best recommendation isn't the strongest product — it's the one that's best suited for what the customer is actually trying to achieve.
That's really our goal at GreenLife. We spend more time educating customers than anything else, and when someone leaves understanding why a product was recommended instead of just buying the highest THC option, we've done our job.
Where do you see the functional beverage category in five years — is this a trend, or does it represent a genuine, lasting shift in how people think about what they drink?
Just in the last year alone, we've seen huge growth in the beverage category. Compared to where things were a few years ago, the demand today is on a completely different level. We're seeing THC beverages pop up in more bars, restaurants, and social settings, and I think that's only going to continue.
I don't think beverages will replace alcohol, but I do think they'll earn a permanent place right alongside it. More people are looking for options that fit their lifestyle — whether that's relaxing after work, enjoying a night out, or just having something social to drink without alcohol.
I also think beverages are going to become a lot of people's first cannabis product. They're approachable, familiar, discreet, and easy to understand. As education continues to grow, I think we'll see more and more people choosing beverages not because they're trendy, but because they fit naturally into everyday life.
